Thinking about offering The Electric Car Scheme to your employees? You’re in the right place. Below are answers to the most frequently asked questions from employers about how the scheme works, what it involves, and how we support you every step of the way.
✅ What’s the impact on employers?
The good news: it’s incredibly light-touch. Here’s what you can expect:
-
No setup or admin costs – Joining the scheme is completely free.
-
Minimal admin – We handle onboarding, employee comms, support, salary sacrifice documentation, and payroll integration.
-
Fully managed service – Our expert team works directly with your employees so you don’t need to become an EV expert.
-
User-friendly employer dashboard – You’ll manage quotes, vehicle orders, invoices, and reports all in one place.
- Scalable and flexible – Whether you have 5 employees or 5,000, the process remains smooth and consistent.
It’s a cost-neutral, high-impact benefit you can roll out quickly and easily.
🔄 What happens if an employee leaves during the lease?
We know circumstances can change, so Complete Employer Protection is included as standard in all our schemes. This protects your business financially in case an employee:
- Resigns
- Is made redundant
- Goes on long-term sick leave
- Takes parental leave
We’ll help manage early terminations and ensure your company doesn’t absorb any unexpected costs. It’s peace of mind, built in.
🚘 What’s included in the lease?
Each lease typically includes:
- A brand-new electric vehicle
- Fully comprehensive insurance
- Maintenance and servicing
- Roadside breakdown cover
- Road tax
- Optional extras (like tyre packages or home charger installations)
We make the experience hassle-free for both employers and employees.
🛡️ What about insurance – who provides it?
Employers have the option to include or exclude insurance as part of the benefit. These are:
- Mandatory for all employees- all lease orders will automatically include insurance
- Optional for all employees - all lease orders can either include it as part of the order through ECS. Or they can source their own cover
- Excluded - all employees must source their own insurance provider
If included, insurance is arranged as part of the lease package through one of our trusted providers. That means:
- The vehicle is fully insured for personal and commuting use
- Employees don’t need to worry about setting it up themselves
- Employers don’t need to take on any fleet insurance responsibilities
Insurance for Subscription Vehicles
Please note that insurance is included with all subscription vehicles and is built into the monthly subscription cost.
🔁 Can this scheme work alongside other salary sacrifice benefits?
Yes, The Electric Car Scheme can operate alongside other employee benefits like:
- Cycle to Work
- Pension contributions
- Childcare vouchers
- Gym memberships
However, because salary sacrifice reduces an employee’s gross pay, it’s important to check how it may impact other salary-linked entitlements. We always recommend employees review this with HR or payroll teams before committing.
📉 Will it affect employer NICs or pension contributions?
Yes – but in a good way! Because employees are sacrificing gross salary, employers also save on National Insurance Contributions (NICs). These savings can:
- Be retained by the company
- Be reinvested into other employee benefits
- Help offset the admin time for internal teams
Pension contributions may be slightly reduced if they're based on gross salary – so it's important to check your pension scheme setup before rolling out the scheme.
📢 How do we launch the scheme internally?
We support you every step of the way, including:
- Custom launch communications
- Webinars and live Q&A for your team
- Email templates and FAQs
- Onboarding guides for HR, finance and payroll
- One-on-one employee support for car quotes and ordering
You don’t need internal marketing or fleet expertise – we’ll take care of the education and engagement for you.
🚘 Can employees use the car for personal needs?
Yes! With The Electric Car Scheme, employees can use the car for solely personal needs and still be able to salary sacrifice. The car is however still considered a company car.
🚫 What happens if an employee cancels their order?
Sometimes things change. If an employee needs to cancel their order before delivery, we’ll help manage the process. Depending on the stage of the order, there may be cancellation charges from the leasing provider – these will be clearly explained before anything is signed.
